Set in the 1960s, the British slapstick gangster comedy "One Man, Two Guvnors" follows the easily confused Francis Henshall, who's become entangled with two local criminals and is desperately trying to keep them from finding out that he's working for both. Throw in some cross-dressing, several romantic complications and a cavalcade of biting one-liners and the scene is set for a laugh-out-loud mix of satire, songs, slapstick and well-timed zingers. Adapted from Goldoni's classic 18th-century commedia "Servant of Two Masters", this nonstop parade of fools, lovers, clowns, parents and pompous asses -- hailed as "one of the most hilarious shows" in British theater history and nominated for seven Tonys in 2012 -- comes to Phoenix Theatre. It's 1960 and Parisian lothario Bernard has it good, what with his three fiancées -- all beautiful airline hostesses with frequent (but never overlapping) layovers in Paris. And thanks to Bernard's faithful maid, who swaps out the photographs in his apartment according to schedule, the women will never find out about each other. That is until a new, faster Boeing jet throws the airline schedules out of whack and Bernard finds himself with all three women on his hands at once. Add Bernard's friend -- who's hilariously bad at keeping all the lies straight -- to the mix, and the whole plan is poised to fall apart. This slapstick farce from French playwright Marc Camoletti has been performed in London and on Broadway and was made into a 1965 film starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis. Now you can laugh along with all the saucy fun at this Don Bluth Front Row Theatre production of "Boeing Boeing". [less-]

He left audiences in stitches with "Barefoot in the Park" and "The Odd Couple", and Neil Simon turns the comedy dial up to 11 in "Rumors". A farce in the grand door-slamming, ridiculous-lie-piled-atop-ridiculous-lie tradition, "Rumors" starts swirling when Charlie, the Deputy Mayor of New York, invites his society pals to a swanky black-tie party at his townhouse. What could go wrong? Well, Charlie shooting himself in the earlobe certainly sends the action in a decidedly wacky direction. And his wife is nowhere to be found. One comic mishap after another whips up this frothy and funny evening of misunderstanding, intrigue and (yep) rumors. This production of "Rumors" is performed by Desert Stages Theatre at their Actor's Cafe. [less-]

Actors from the Nearly Naked Theatre company perform this sweeping American epic by Tony Kushner that takes a wry look at the AIDS epidemic and the political and social climate of America in the 1980s. Part 1, "Millennium Approaches", follows two very different but equally troubled young New York couples whose fates become intertwined. Sparks fly as the play's large and sharply drawn cast (which ranges from the diabolical, AIDS-stricken lawyer Roy Cohn to an actual angel) clash over the personal, the political and the theological. In Part 2, "Perestroika", the AIDS epidemic escalates, the ozone layer weakens and God has abandoned humanity. The setting has moved from the opportunistic '80s to a new sense of community in the '90s. Kushner creates a cosmic-scale portrait of legendary characters, including ancient rabbis, blind revolutionaries, imaginary travel agents and, of course, angels, set against a backdrop of old relationships ending while new, unexpected ones begin, amid questions of morality, guilt and forgiveness. See both parts of this epic masterpiece in repertory at Phoenix Theatre's Hormel Black Box Theatre. [less-]
